How To Pot a Plant Re: The August Edit

There’s nothing we love more than freshening up a look (on you, or your space), and the August Edit is about just that. There are two things we KNOW to create that warm fuzzy feeling when styling: handmade jewelry + lush green plants. We know, we know, you already know the jewelry part, but don’t even TRY to tell us that plants don’t make a difference in a space. THEY DO. Just take a look at all of our imagery for this edit. Not sure why we’re picking fights over this but it’s important, OKAY?! To our point–both jewelry and plants bring a freshness and beauty to everyday life that is so necessary. Sometimes, it’s just the little things!

Part 1: The Plants

Some of our favorite plants around the office, and used in the August Edit shoot, are the monstera (obviously), bird of paradise, snake plant, cacti (any type: we don’t discriminate), string of pearls, aloe, and many, many more. Because the August Edit wouldn’t be what it is without our favorite plants, we’re going to walk you through all the best tips + tricks we use when potting our little leafy green buddies!

  1. Check the roots + general health of the plant.
    • Pop the plant out of the pot.
    • If the plant looks root bound, go up one pot size! If it’s not root bound, then it probably doesn’t need a new pot.
  2. Pick a new pot: only go up in pot size a couple of inches at a time.
    • Example, for your plant that’s currently in a 4” pot, pick a new pot that is 6”.
    • A lot of plants (especially house plants) like to be a little more root bound in their pots and don’t want too much room in the pot to hold extra moisture. The extra moisture can cause root-rot + a nice cozy place for bugs to make a home in. Ew.
  3. Pick a “chunky” house plant mix.
    • This mix consists of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark. You don’t want to skip this step as it’s crucial for giving your plant the happiest home possible!
    • This mix helps with drainage and provides a little extra oxygen for the plant roots to “breathe”.
  4. Pot it!
    • Add a layer of the mix into the bottom of the new pot and place your plant on top of that soil.
    • Backfill the soil: this means adding new soil around the edges to fill the pot.
    • Pack the soil down firmly.
  5. Water.
    • Give ‘er a nice drink!
    • Clean the leaves off + set the plant back in its resting spot.

If you’re using a plastic pot, then boy do we have links for you! We love to place our plants in woven baskets! It brings an elevated look to your space without breaking the bank of expensive ceramic pieces. Plus, who doesn’t love a touch of wicker?

Part 2: The Jewelry

The August Edit jewelry was inspired by the dog days of summer that we live for. We've channeled desert vibes, terracotta hues, tropical plants (duh!), and jewelry that we NEVER need to take off. This collection is for the ones who wish they never had to see summer come to an end, and features both minimal and bold designs: all of which can be left on as we enjoy these summer days – swim, sweat, shower and totally life proof.

  • Rey Necklace: With a pendant unlike all our others, the Rey Necklace is for those who strive to stand out and be unique! A stunning opal with hand-stamped rays beaming from it, this necklace is made for those dreamy late-summer nights.
  • Phoebe Bracelet: A double chain bracelet made of our Stevie + Demi chains. Because they're both curb chains, they lay flat on your wrist and NEVER tangle. Ideal for a sleek, minimalist look.

  • Fiona Hoops: A unique, U-shaped, floral hoop that will turn heads.
  • Dalia Backdrops: A backdrop that cascades beautifully from behind the ear. Our favorite studs to pair these with are our Poppy Studs.
  • Poppy Studs: Like our Poppy Ring, these studs are made with Opal—a gemstone that is believed to enhance self worth + is connected to the crown chakra. Perfect for keeping close to the crown, right?

  • The Dune Ring: The Dune Ring makes a statement while allowing other rings in your stack to shine. In our opinion, there is no better ring to pair Dune with than one of our Gemstone Rings.
  • Flora Ring: This bold stacking band features a floral pattern and is designed to stand the test of time. She's bold + feminine all at the same time, just how we like it.

If you haven’t experimented with freshening up your look or your space in a while, take this as YOUR SIGN to do so. Jewelry + plants can go a long way–they sure go a long way in our office space (see evidence here).
